Disconnected Review

Today, we are all so reliant on computers. It's become something we don't even think twice about before logging on. It allows us to contact others, see whats going on in the world, game, and even use it for school assignments. Disconnected is a documentary all about 3 college students going a month without using a computer

The experiment the 3 students did was interesting. They were not just doing it for a class but were doing it to get over their own addiction to computers. It was not surprising at all the way they handled it and the way it went. They started out fine and felt it was easy at first however it took some getting used to right away without a computer. They learned just how important a computer was to them and how it was a daily part of their lives. I found it interesting watching them try and figure out a typewriter which actually surprised me they were not familiar with one. I learned how to use one when I was a kid but I never really realized that most people my age are not familiar with how they work.

While this was made in 2007, I feel though today going without a computer would either be a lot easier or a lot harder. Today we have smart phones, which can do a lot of amazing things and is pretty much a small computer in your hand. So, if we did the experiment today, we would have to determine whether or not using a smart phone is allowed or if it is not. If we can use our phones, it would be a lot easier, but if we couldn't, it would most likely be a lot harder.

This leads me to wonder what technology is important to me. I think I could give up using computers and video games fairly easy as long as I would still have my phone. My phone is one that I would struggle most with trying to go without. My phone is there for entertainment, and is pretty much how I contact everyone. I feel that without video games, and my phone, my academic grades would probably be better considering I would have more time and less distractions. However, I would need my computer because of how serious it is to have it especially for school.

  1. Logan, I couldn't agree more! I considered the possibility of what it would be like to re-do the experiment, and I think it would be a lot harder if we couldn't use our phones. I do so much work on my laptop, but to not be able to contact anyone and use other tools on my phone (alarm clock, calendar, etc.) I think it would have more of an affect on us than it did those students in 2007.
