The Incredible Plot change in The Incredibles

The Incredibles is an action Pixar film which premiered in 2004. It paints a picture of good vs evil as well as a family's journey together becoming closer and accepting the powers that they all have. The story begins with a flash back which shows important facts to the plot which is later revealed in the film. These ideas change the direction of the film as well as the plot.
During The Incredibles 116 minute run time you are introduced to the Parr family, a super hero family all with their own powers. The beginning of the family is referenced in the beginning of the film where you see Mr. Incredible fighting crime all day before heading to his wedding. At this part of the movie you see Mr. Incredible run into Buddy, Mr. Incredibles number one fan and hope to be sidekick. While the scene might not hold much significance at the time, it leads to a scene later in the movie which changes the direction of the plot.

About 55 mins into the plot, Mr. Incredible is faced with the task of defeating a robot that is inhabiting a secret island. While battling this robot, Mr. Incredible ultimately fails, and faces what surely is his doom. At this point, the robot stops before killing Mr. Incredible thanks to the robots creator Syndrome coming in and making his first appearance. Syndrome then explains who he is, revealing to be Buddy from the flashback at the beginning of the movie, and he expresses his hatred for Mr. Incredible because of Mr. Incredible's denial to let Buddy assist him as his sidekick back in the day. Mr. Incredible feels regret at this point but it is mostly caused by fear of losing his life. Syndrome whips Mr. Incredible around before tossing him across the island ending their first encounter.

This scene shows an important plot change in the movie as we are introduced to the main antagonist of the film. The significance of the antagonist is that in the past he was only concerned with helping Mr. Incredible, but due to how he was treated, he now only wishes to bring Mr. Incredible his defeat. This scene has two significant importance's. First, that the plot has quickly changed. Up to this point, Mr. Incredibles main purpose was to escape his everyday life and get back into shape of being a superhero once again. However, after this altercation, Mr. Incredible as well as the rest of his family are faced with the task of defeating Syndrome, whose own goal is to gain fame and power, as well as change the world. The shift from Mr. Incredible fixing himself and being away from his family soon changes into saving the world as well as working with his family all for the greater good. The second significant factor of this scene is that it reveals a part of Mr. Incredibles past which is not so glamorous. It brings him back to when his superhero reputation was soon changed and he began his descent into an ordinary person. It also touches on how his past treatment of Buddy has lead to the threat of his life and the worlds safety. I believe from that point on in the film we saw how Mr. Incredible was able to redeem himself by shinning as a hero to the public as well as growing close to his family.

So, in conclusion, you see the significance of the first appearance of Syndrome in the film The Incredibles as the overall plot changing and beginning of redemption for Mr. Incredible as well as the growing of the Parr family.

  1. Logan, this scene is a huge turning point in The Incredibles. I agree with how you explained that the family coming together for the grader good, impacted the movie a lot, but also showed that family is important no matter what. Also, I liked how you really described the scene in detail and I knew exactly what part of the movie you were describing.
